Formlabs Alpha Model Resin (Form Studio 1) 1 Litre

Formlabs Alpha Model Resin is engineered specifically for the Form Studio 1 to deliver crisp fine features, ultra-fine accuracy, and a deep, fully matte, neutral surface that captures every micro-crevice and texture while taking paint evenly. Designed with enhanced flexibility, thin features flex instead of snapping, ensuring detailed scale models, figurines, busts, and multi-part assemblies survive painting, handling, and transport. Supporting 30 µm and 50 µm layer heights in PreForm, it delivers high-definition modeling at a significantly reduced consumable cost. When printed on the Form Studio 1 with the VOC Extractor, Alpha Model Resin is independently certified for UL GREENGUARD Gold for low chemical emissions and indoor safety.

What is Formlabs Alpha Model Resin?

Formlabs Alpha Model Resin is a purpose-formulated photopolymer material developed specifically for the Form Studio 1 3D printer. Engineered for model makers, sculptors, and prop designers, it produces a deep, fully matte, neutral surface that captures fine surface textures, micro-crevices, and intricate contours without reflective glare or visible layer lines.

Beyond aesthetic fidelity, Alpha Model Resin is built to be handled. Rather than being brittle, delicate and thin features are formulated to flex under stress rather than snap, allowing finished models and figurines to easily survive support removal, painting, assembly, transport, and unexpected drops. When printed inside the Form Studio 1 equipped with the Formlabs VOC Extractor, Alpha Model Resin is independently certified for UL GREENGUARD Gold, setting a benchmark for low-odor, low-emission indoor safety.

Key Features at a Glance

  • Ultra-Fine Detail & Precision: Optimized for high-definition 30 µm and 50 µm layer heights to resolve the sharpest edges and delicate geometries.
  • Deep Matte & Paint-Receptive Finish: Neutral, non-reflective surface masks layer stepping and takes primers, acrylics, and model paints evenly.
  • Built to Be Handled: Thin walls and fine features flex instead of snapping, protecting finished miniatures, props, and multi-part assemblies.
  • Precise Multi-Part Fit: Holds dimensional accuracy across the entire build platform so interlocking components assemble cleanly.
  • UL GREENGUARD Gold Certified: Independently certified for low chemical emissions when printed on Form Studio 1 with the VOC Extractor.
  • Skin-Safe & Low-Odor Chemistry: ACMO-free formulation; cured parts meet ISO 10993 requirements for long-term (>30 day) skin contact.
  • Resin Washing Solution Compatible: Validated for cleaning in Formlabs Resin Washing Solution as well as standard IPA and TPM solvents.

Why Choose Alpha Model Resin for Your Studio?

Produce display-ready scale models, intricate character sculpts, and dependable multi-part assemblies with exceptional surface quality and peace of mind.

Flawless Detail & Textures

Resolves micro-crevices, hair strands, fabric textures, and sharp character margins that typical general-purpose resins blend away.

Even Paint Adhesion

The neutral, deep matte finish acts as a receptive primer-ready base, ensuring model paints, washes, and airbrushed layers adhere smoothly without beading.

Break-Resistant Handling

Delicate extremities, fine weapons, and thin accessories flex under accidental drops or assembly forces instead of shattering like brittle standard resin.

Indoor Certified Air Safety

Low odor and ACMO-free, certified to UL GREENGUARD Gold standards for comfortable, everyday printing in classrooms, design studios, and homes.

How It Works: Technology, Settings & Comparison

Alpha Model Resin is tuned specifically for the Form Studio 1's Low Force Display (LFD) light engine. By balancing 405 nm photopolymer exposure with the release characteristics of the Form Studio 1 Resin Tank, the system resolves features down to 30 µm layer heights with clean mechanical peel action.

Choosing the Right Alpha Resin: Model vs. Grey vs. Fast

The Alpha Resin family offers distinct formulations tailored to your priorities for detail, turnaround speed, and production throughput:

Material Key Characteristic Primary Layer Height Print Speed Recommended For
Alpha Model Resin Best fine features and matte finish 50 µm (30 µm available) 15 mm/h Scale models, figurines, sculptures, and busts
Alpha Grey Resin Balance of speed and aesthetics 100 µm (50 µm available) 40 mm/h Concept models, form and fit prototyping, jigs, and fixtures
Alpha Fast Resin Fastest printing 150 µm (250 µm available) 90 mm/h (up to 130 mm/h at 250 µm) Rapid prototyping, jigs, and fixtures

Validated PreForm Settings

Alpha Model Resin ships with fully validated PreForm print settings for 50 micron and 30 micron layer heights, giving you full control over layer visibility and fine margin resolution.

What is UL GREENGUARD Gold and Why Does It Matter?

UL GREENGUARD Gold is an independently tested standard for low chemical emissions, featuring stricter criteria than standard GREENGUARD to ensure safety in sensitive indoor environments like classrooms and healthcare spaces.

When printed on the Form Studio 1 with the VOC Extractor, Alpha Resins are the first and only 3D printing materials to achieve UL GREENGUARD Gold certification.

Note: GREENGUARD Gold certification applies specifically to Alpha Resins printed on the Form Studio 1 with an active VOC Extractor.

Standard 4-Step Print Workflow:

  1. Prepare: Import your model into PreForm, select Alpha Model Resin, and choose either 30 µm or 50 µm layer resolution with automatic support generation.
  2. Print: Insert the 1 L cartridge into the Form Studio 1. The printer automatically handles resin dispensing hands-free.
  3. Wash: Transfer parts to the Form Studio Wash+Cure. Run a 5-minute wash cycle using Resin Washing Solution, IPA, or TPM, then raise the basket to let parts air dry.
  4. Cure: Place parts on the glass turntable in the Form Studio Wash+Cure and run the 5-minute UV cycle for a clean, tack-free, and paint-ready surface.
