What is Formlabs Alpha Clear Resin?

Formlabs Alpha Clear Resin is a next-generation photopolymer material developed specifically for the Form Studio 1 3D printer. Formulated to offer a balance of optical transparency, dimensional stability, and production speed, Alpha Clear Resin provides high-grade SLA performance at a significantly reduced consumable cost.

This formulation cures to a highly transparent, smooth finish that excels at showcasing internal channels or creating glass-like visual prototypes, making parts ready for presentation, fluidics testing, or functional assembly straight out of post-processing. Beyond visual fidelity, Alpha Clear Resin delivers true engineering-grade mechanical properties that exceed typical ABS filaments and ABS-like resins. When printed inside the Form Studio 1 equipped with the Formlabs VOC Extractor, Alpha Resins become the first 3D printing materials independently certified for UL GREENGUARD Gold, setting a benchmark for indoor environmental safety.

Key Features at a Glance

  • Exceptional Transparency: Achieves a beautiful, highly translucent clear finish ideal for optics, fluidics, and transparent enclosures.
  • Blazing Fast 45 mm/h Speeds: Consistently prints at speeds up to 45 mm/h regardless of part height, orientation, or packing density.
  • ABS-Beating Mechanical Performance: 38 MPa ultimate tensile strength and 32% elongation at break deliver toughness and snap-fit durability.
  • UL GREENGUARD Gold Certified: Independently certified for low chemical emissions when printed on Form Studio 1 with the VOC Extractor.
  • Skin Contact Compliant & Low-Odor: ACMO-free, low-odor chemistry; post-cured parts satisfy ISO 10993 requirements for long-term (>30 day) skin contact.
  • Resin Washing Solution Compatible: Validated for cleaning in Formlabs Resin Washing Solution as well as standard IPA and TPM solvents.

Why Choose Alpha Clear Resin for Your Studio?

Achieve presentation-grade transparency, robust physical properties, and indoor safety across all your desktop resin prints.

High Optical Clarity

Perfect for showcasing internal geometries, working with microfluidics, or creating visually stunning glass-like stand-ins that require high light transmittance.

Engineering Strength & Toughness

With 43 MPa tensile strength and 34% elongation at break, parts comfortably absorb functional impacts, endure flexures, and support snap-fit assemblies without shattering.

Uncompromised Indoor Safety

Formulated with low-odor, ACMO-free chemicals and certified to strict UL GREENGUARD Gold emission standards for everyday use in shared workspaces, schools, and design labs.

Exceptional Cost-per-Part Value

Significantly lower cost than previous general-purpose SLA resins, allowing engineering and creative teams to iterate models and run pilot batches on tight budgets.

How It Works: Technology & Technical Highlights

Alpha Resins are tailored to complement the Form Studio 1's Low Force Display (LFD) light engine. By pairing photopolymer chemistry directly to the 405 nm light source and the non-stick film of the Form Studio 1 Resin Tank, the system prints at constant speeds up to 45 mm/h without requiring an internal mechanical mixer arm.

What is UL GREENGUARD Gold and Why Does It Matter?

UL GREENGUARD is a globally recognised, third-party testing standard evaluating volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. While standard GREENGUARD testing confirms low total emissions, UL GREENGUARD Gold applies even stricter safety limits designed to safeguard vulnerable occupants in schools, childcare facilities, and healthcare settings.

When printed on the Form Studio 1 with the VOC Extractor, Alpha Resins are the first and only 3D printing materials to achieve this certification.

Note: GREENGUARD Gold certification applies specifically to Alpha Resins printed on the Form Studio 1 system with an active VOC Extractor.

Chemical Formulation & Handling Precautions

All Formlabs resins are completely free of ACMO (Acryloyl morpholine) and formulated using vetted chemicals to eliminate acute toxins or substances with known reproductive hazards.

  • Safety Protocols: Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) prior to handling. Chemical-resistant gloves (such as nitrile) are recommended when working with liquid resin.
  • Skin-Contact Readiness: Finished parts meet ISO 10993 requirements for non-cytotoxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitising skin contact exceeding 30 days when properly washed and post-cured.
  • Washing Flexibility: Alpha Resins can be cleaned in Formlabs Resin Washing Solution, Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA), or TPM. (Note: While Alpha Resins support Resin Washing Solution, Tough 1500 V2, Flexible 80A V2, and True Cast require IPA or TPM).

Standard 4-Step Print Workflow:

  1. Prepare: Import your CAD model into PreForm, choose Alpha Clear Resin, and apply auto-generation for supports and orientation.
  2. Print: Insert the resin cartridge into your Form Studio 1. The hands-free dispensing system meters resin cleanly into the tank.
  3. Wash: Transfer parts to the Form Studio Wash+Cure basin. Run a standard 5-minute wash cycle using Resin Washing Solution, IPA, or TPM, then raise parts to dry.
  4. Cure: Place parts on the glass turntable in the Form Studio Wash+Cure. Run the default 5-minute 405 nm UV cycle to finish polymerisation and achieve a dry, tack-free surface. (Pro Tip: For maximum optical clarity in clear resins, follow Formlabs' recommended polishing and clear-coating techniques post-cure).
